Kitchen Cabinet Hinge Adjustment Guide

easyHome Repair1 hr

This guide teaches beginners how to align sagging, rubbing, or uneven kitchen cabinet doors using adjustment screws. You will learn how to correct lateral, vertical, and depth misalignments to ensure doors close flush and operate smoothly.

Safety Warnings

  • Use a manual screwdriver rather than a power drill for final tightening to avoid stripping the timber or hinge threads.

Steps

1
Inspect all hinge mounting screws to ensure they are secure. Check the four mounting screws: two on the door and two on the inside of the cabinet (the innermost screws on the mounting bracket). Tighten any loose screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Tip: If a screw spins in the timber and won't tighten, replace it with a screw of a larger diameter gauge, but not a longer length.
2
Correct lateral (sideways) alignment by locating the screw on the horizontal arm closest to the door. Turn the screw clockwise to shift the door to the right, or counterclockwise to shift it to the left.
Tip: Work slowly and periodically close the door to check the position.
3
Adjust the height of the door if it is sagging or uneven. Locate the uppermost screw on the hinge plate mounted to the inside of the cabinet; turn it clockwise to move the door up or counterclockwise to lower it.
Tip: Use a level along the edge of the door to ensure it sits straight.
4
Fix depth issues where the door is not flush with the cabinet or is too close to shut. Turn the screw on the horizontal arm farthest from the door (centered between the two mounting screws) clockwise to draw the door inward or counterclockwise to move it outward.
5
Address 'binding' issues where the door bounces back when shut. Locate the adjusting screw at the back of the hinge and turn it anti-clockwise to bring the door away from the cabinet; repeat this for both the top and bottom hinges.
6
Perform a final test by closing the doors to verify that gaps are even, the doors are flush, and they operate smoothly without rubbing. Wipe away fingerprints with a soft cloth once all hardware is securely tightened.

Pro Tips

  • Lay masking tape along cabinet and door edges to avoid scratching the finish during adjustment.
  • Adjust just one door at a time and use small turns on the adjustment screws to avoid overshooting the target position.
  • Take a photo of the door gaps before starting to accurately track improvements.
