Steps

1
Inspect squash stems for eggs located on the main stem or where leaves protrude from the limb.
Search for egg clusters Leaf node Main stem Close-up: Check both the main stem and leaf junctions for small white egg clusters.
2
Manually remove any discovered eggs by wiping them off with your finger to prevent larvae from hatching.
Tip: Since larvae cocoon themselves inside the stem, topical sprays are often ineffective.
3
Wrap aluminum foil around the squash stems to prevent grubs from burrowing in, ensuring the foil extends 1/4 inch beneath the soil surface.
Push foil below soil Aluminum foil Main stem Soil surface Cross-section ยท Foil must extend underground to block borer entry
4
Prepare an injection of 1 ml of organic Bt insecticide using a hypodermic needle.
5
Inject the Bt solution into the main stem approximately 1.5 inches above ground level, which is the typical entry point for the borer.
Inject Bt into stem Main stem Bt syringe 1.5" above soil Side view ยท Target the typical entry point for borers just above the soil line
6
Sterilize the needle using a bleach and water mixture between each plant injection, followed by a rinse with pure water to remove bleach remnants.
7
Repeat the injection process every 7 to 10 days to ensure larvae feeding inside the stem are eliminated.
8
Continue the treatment cycle from the first appearance of borers in late May until approximately mid-August.

Pro Tips

  • Squash vine borers affect all members of the cucurbit family, including pumpkins, summer squash, and butternut squash.
  • In the southeastern United States, borers typically appear in late May and can last up to two generations per year.
