Safety Warnings

  • Always disconnect power by unplugging the dryer before checking continuity or removing panels.
  • Shut off the gas supply line before removing the front panel to access burner components.
  • Ensure the dryer is unplugged before testing any electrical components with a multimeter to avoid electric shock.

Steps

1
Verify that the gas supply line is connected and turned on. Remove the burner sight plug from the lower left corner of the front panel using a flathead screwdriver. Set the timer for timed dry on high heat and start the dryer. Observe through the sight hole to see if the igniter glows.

2
Perform a continuity test on the control circuit. Unplug the dryer and remove the back panel and the back of the control panel. Pull the wire harness plug (red, black, and blue wires) off the timer and the light blue wire from the thermal fuse. Set the multimeter to ohms and measure continuity between the red wire and the blue spade on the thermal fuse.
Thermal Fuse Red Wire Multimeter Test Continuity Measure ohms between the red wire and the thermal fuse spade.
3
Isolate the defective component if continuity is missing (reading 'OL'). Test the high-limit thermostat, operating thermostat, and thermal cut-off fuse individually by placing meter leads on their terminals. If any component shows no continuity (infinite resistance), it must be replaced.

4
Access the burner assembly by shutting off the gas supply and removing the front panel. Remove the lint screen and its housing screws, release the top panel clips, and raise the panel. Unplug the door switch and remove the two screws securing the front panel to the cabinet, then tilt the panel up and out.

5
Remove the drive belt and drum to access the igniter and flame sensor. Push the idler pulley to the right to release tension and pull the belt off the pulleys. Pull the drum out of the dryer. Unplug the igniter wire harness and use the multimeter to check for resistance between 4 and 400 ohms; if it reads 'OL', replace the igniter.

6
Test the flame sensor by removing one of its wires and measuring for near 0 ohms of resistance. If the sensor is open, replace it. Reassemble the unit, reconnect the gas and power, and test a load of laundry. If the dryer still does not heat, call a professional service technician to check the motor centrifugal switch or wiring failures.

Pro Tips

  • If you replace a thermal fuse, check your exhaust vent and clean it with a lint brush, as clogged vents are the primary cause of blown fuses.
  • If the igniter glows but the burner fails to light, you likely need to replace the gas valve coils.
