Steps

1
Prepare the container by filling three-quarters of it with coarse, well-draining potting soil. Use a spray bottle to lightly moisten the soil before filling it to the top, ensuring the container has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent root rot.
2
Sow the basil seeds by scattering 5-7 seeds evenly on top of the soil, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of dry soil, roughly 0.25 inches deep, and mist again with a spray bottle to provide moisture. Tip: Planting multiple seeds per pot compensates for the relatively low germination rate of about 60 percent.

3
Place the container in a warm, sunny spot that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily, such as a south-facing windowsill. If natural light is insufficient, use fluorescent grow lights positioned 2 inches above the plants for 10 to 12 hours a day.

4
Water the basil from the base at the soil line twice a week to keep the plant hydrated while avoiding wetting the leaves. Test the soil dampness by sticking a finger 1 inch deep; if it feels dry, provide water until it drains from the bottom holes.
5
Prune the seedlings once they reach 6 inches in height and have produced at least three to six sets of leaves. Use sharp scissors to trim the stems just above a set of leaves or at the center to encourage the plant to grow bushy rather than lanky.

6
Harvest leaves frequently by pinching off the newer leaves from the top or cutting stems above where two large leaves meet. Regularly pinch off any flower heads as soon as they appear to redirect the plant's energy back into producing foliage.

Pro Tips

  • To prevent pests like aphids or spider mites, spray the leaves with a solution of one teaspoon of liquid soap mixed into a gallon of cool water.
  • Avoid over-fertilizing as it can negatively affect the flavor; a diluted liquid nitrogen-based fertilizer every 3 to 4 weeks is sufficient.
  • If growing outdoors, plant basil alongside tomato plants as it acts as a natural insect repellent.
