Measure and mark the placement of the lock. Typically, the deadbolt is installed 6 to 12 inches above the existing door handle. Use a tape measure and a square to draw a continuous horizontal line across the interior, exterior, and edge of the door.

Position the manufacturer's template on the door according to the required backset (usually 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches). Secure the template to the door using masking tape or pilot screws to ensure it does not shift during drilling.

Bore the holes for the hardware. Use the 2 1/8-inch hole saw to drill the main hole for the lock body; drill halfway through from one side and finish from the other to prevent wood splintering. Use the 1-inch spade bit to drill the hole through the edge of the door for the bolt.

Create the mortise for the faceplate. Place the faceplate against the door edge and trace its outline with a pencil. Use the 1-inch chisel to carve out a shallow recess (about 1/8-inch deep) so the faceplate sits flush with the door surface.

Install the deadbolt mechanism. Slide the bolt into the edge hole, ensuring it is oriented correctly (top pointing up). Secure the faceplate with the provided screws, then insert the lock cylinder through the face of the door and fasten it with the mounting screws.

Prepare the door jamb. Mark the location where the bolt hits the frame. Drill a hole into the jamb using the 1-inch spade bit, deep enough to allow the bolt to extend fully. Chisel out a small mortise for the strike plate to ensure it sits flush.

Install the strike plate. Position the strike plate over the hole in the jamb and secure it. Replace the standard short screws with 3-inch screws to anchor the plate deeply into the wall framing for maximum security.
Tip: Do not overtighten the screws, as this can warp the door jamb.

Test the installation. Close the door and turn the thumb turn or use the key to ensure the bolt extends fully into the strike plate without interference. If the bolt sticks, slightly adjust the strike plate position.

Pro Tips

  • If you are replacing an old lock, check if the existing holes match the new hardware specs to avoid unnecessary drilling.
  • Test bolt alignment by coating the bolt tip with lipstick or chalk — close the door, extend the bolt, then open it to see exactly where it hits the jamb.
  • Replace the short strike plate screws with 3-inch deck screws to anchor into the door frame stud — this dramatically improves kick-in resistance.
