Select a level location that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight daily and is sheltered from high winds. Use scrap wood or rope to test the layout before finalized placement.

Determine dimensions based on your plants; most vegetables need 12 inches of depth, while root crops like carrots or potatoes benefit from 18 to 24 inches. Keep the width to a maximum of 3 feet to ensure you can reach the center from either side.

Construct the frame by screwing rot-resistant boards (like cedar) together. For a standard rectangular bed, create two long sides and two short ends, securing corners with exterior-grade screws. If building taller beds, stack rectangles and secure them with 2x4 scrap wood in the corners.
Tip: Drill pilot holes close to the end of each plank to prevent the wood from splitting.
