Steps

1
Measure the desired location for the towel bar and mark the bracket positions using a tape measure and a level to ensure the bar will be straight.
Tip: Use painter's tape over the drill sites to provide traction and prevent the drill bit from slipping and scratching the tile.
2
For porcelain tile, use a diamond hole saw bit to drill through the surface. Start the drill at an angle and slowly work toward a flat position.
Tip: Keep the diamond bit wet with a sponge or wet rag during drilling to prevent overheating and preserve the diamonds.
3
If the tile is ceramic and not porcelain, you may use a carbide-tipped masonry bit. Set the drill to its lowest speed and apply moderate pressure.
Tip: Lubricate the bit with water or cutting oil every 15 to 30 seconds if it begins to overheat.
4
If the hole extends into drywall behind the tile, use a masonry bit to finish the hole through the drywall to the required depth for the anchors.
5
Insert sturdy wall anchors, such as wing it anchors, into the drilled holes. Tap them gently into place with the screws to ensure they are seated firmly.
Tip: Wing it anchors are recommended for tile as they provide high holding capacity by expanding behind the substrate.
6
Align the mounting brackets over the anchors and secure them to the wall using the provided screws and a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
7
Slide the towel bar into the installed mounting brackets and check that it is solid by giving it a gentle tug.

Pro Tips

  • If you hit a wall stud while drilling through the tile, you can bypass the anchor and secure the bracket directly to the stud using a lag screw.
