Steps

1
Mask off countertops, outlets, and nearby fixtures using painter's tape to protect them from grout and debris.
2
Carefully remove the old, damaged, or stained grout from between the tiles using a grout saw or an oscillating multi-tool. Be cautious not to chip the edges of the tiles during this process.
3
Vacuum all dust from the joints and wipe the area with a damp sponge to ensure the lines are clean and prepared for the fresh grout.
4
Mix the new grout according to the package instructions until it reaches a smooth and spreadable consistency.
5
Pack the grout into the lines using a rubber grout float, holding the tool at a 45-degree angle to the joints to ensure the gaps are fully filled.
Tip: Work in small sections to prevent the grout from setting up before you can wipe away the haze.
6
Remove excess grout by dragging the rubber float diagonally across the tiles.
7
Allow the grout to set for 10-15 minutes, then wipe away the remaining residue with a damp sponge. Rinse the sponge frequently in clean water.
8
Let the grout cure completely, which typically takes 24 hours. Once cured, buff the tiles with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any remaining haze.
9
Apply a grout sealer to the joints to provide long-lasting protection against stains and mold.

Pro Tips

  • Never layer new grout over old grout as it will not last.
  • Using multiple sponges makes cleaning easier, as clean tiles are easier to buff than scrub.
