Steps

1
Prepare the work area by placing a bucket under the water supply line and having a towel or sponge on hand to catch spills.
2
Turn off the water supply by rotating the isolation valve located on the wall behind the toilet clockwise. Flush the toilet and hold the lever down to empty as much water as possible from the tank.
Tip: Use a sponge or wet vacuum to remove the remaining small amount of water from the bottom of the tank.
3
Remove the tank lid and set it aside safely. Use pliers to disconnect the water supply line from the base of the toilet tank, draining any remaining water into the bucket.

4
Unscrew the locking nut from the bottom of the tank using an adjustable wrench or pliers. Once loosened, lift the old fill valve assembly out of the tank.

5
Insert the new fill valve into the hole in the tank. Adjust the valve height so that the top sits approximately one inch below the top of the overflow tube.
Tip: Check that the refill tube is properly inserted into the overflow pipe and secured with the included clip.

6
Secure the fill valve by sliding the included washers onto the stem and tightening the locking nut on the bottom of the tank. Hand-tighten only to avoid cracking the porcelain.

7
Reattach the water supply line to the base of the fill valve. Hand-tighten the nut first, then use pliers to snug the connection without over-tightening.

Turn the water supply valve back on counter-clockwise and allow the tank to fill. Check all connections for leaks and verify that the water stops about one inch below the overflow tube.

Pro Tips

  • Replace your fill valve approximately every 5 years as part of regular toilet maintenance.
  • If you are unsure of the specific valve type, a universal toilet fill valve will fit most toilets.
