Steps

1
Examine your lawn and identify where grass has been regularly traversed and worn down to a natural path to determine the ideal location.
2
Determine stone placement by walking along the path and placing landscaping spikes where the center of your foot lands at each step to align with a comfortable walking stride.

3
Center a stone atop each stake and use a garden trowel or utility knife to carve a line around the perimeter. Remove the stone and dig out the sod, ensuring the hole is about an inch deeper than the depth of the stone with a flat bottom.

4
Pour a 1/4- to 1/2-inch layer of crushed limestone or coarse sand into the bottom of the hole. Pack the material down and use a level to ensure the base is flat.
Tip: If using coarse sand, moisten it with a fine spray of water to help tamp it down and pack it tightly.
5
Place the stepping stone into the hole and press it into the packed material. Pack additional loose sand or crushed stone around the edges for extra support.

6
Set the stone firmly in place by tapping it with a rubber mallet or standing on it. Repeat the excavation and setting process until the entire path is completed.

Pro Tips

  • Mixing and matching textures and tones of paving stones can add visual interest and create a custom look.
  • A base layer of sand or crushed stone is essential to keep the stones from sinking over time.
